Frequent visitors may have noticed that this list of liquid links has been trimmed quite a bit lately.
When I started out in 1995 I had the idea of building the biggest whisky link library in the world - but
even in the 1990's I felt there was some chaff amongst the grain. Over the years I've grown a bit more
selective and sometimes excellent sites just wither away after a few years. On this page I'll try to offer a
'digest' (or rather, a pre-digest of sorts) of the thousands of whisky websites around the world. Some
websites in some categories like 'shops & bars' are commercial by definition, but I've removed the many
(overt & covert) commercial sites from the other categories. If a website hasn't been updated in over a
year I usually remove the link as well. I've stopped maintaining a collection of links to whisky events here,
but malt maniac Konstantin Grigoriadis now publishes fresh data on the Malt Maniacs frontpage regularly.

Personal favourits

Malt Maniacs
MM & Friends on Facebook
Nonjatta
Spirit of Islay

Hehehe ;-)  Obviously, the sub-site of our international whisky freaks collective is a favourite.
Yes, now we also have our own little friendly community on FaceBook - with discussion board.
Very enjoyable blog about Japanese Whisky by Chris Bunting. Even more 'niche' than MM!
Beautiful shrine for Ardbeg and other Islay malt whiskies by Gordon Homer. Weekly chats!
Serge Valentin's website; Malt Maniacs 'dependance', music reviews, the Brora Barnum & more.
I usually prefer non-commercial websites, but Whisky Magazine provides an excellent service.

Distilleries in Scotland

Ah..., yes, well...., you see.... Up until a few years ago this used to be the biggest section of the Liquid Links page.
This page used to contain links to the websites of all malt whisky distilleries in Scotland - or at least the distilleries that actually had a website. In the late 1990's those were the positive exceptions, but these days almost every distillery has one. Unfortunately, not all of those sites offer much useful information. Fine - I can live with that. But there's more... These days most of the websites have an opening page where you have to fill out your age (and often much more) before you can gain access to the site. Supposedly, that 'security measure' would prevent minors from accessing the website. Well, that might work if they cared enough to invest in the technology and manpower they would need to actually CHECK the data that people submit. But they don't! So, if a spotty teenager from Gloucestershire simply pretends to be a 99 year old Mongolian, he'll gain access to the site - no questions asked. What's more, if they really cared about the dangerous side-effects of alcohol they should start looking for jobs in more benign industries like arts & crafts or healthcare. The HYPOCRISY of it all gets on my nerves - so by the time I actually enter the site my tolerance levels often are dangerously low. So when the people behind Glenmorangie's website try to push yet another 'flash screen' down my throat (after the annoying 'token' entry page) that's enough to transform my mood from 'annoyed' to 'pissed off'. I used to fight my gloomy moods with a nice dram, but recently I discovered that action works even better. So, I've simply removed some of the most annoying distillery websites from this list. You can still find most of them in the Distillery Data section though.

Attractive design, but the site is a major disaster if you don't like 'cookies'.
A site with a personality of it's own. Not a lot of actual information, though.
A relatively simple website with quite a lot of information about Arran.
Slick website without too much actual content when I write this.
A beautiful site with not too much content. Watch out: tricky navigation.
Basic site with information about the range, the distilley and the visitor centre.
The distillery was purchased by Gordon & MacPahil and re-opened in 1998.
The revitalised distillery has a revitalised website. Purplest site on the web?
Not really a seperate website, but some useful information on this Diageo site.
Company site. Great design, but like most official site the content is pretty lame.
The new whisky is great, but I don't care too much for the official website.
The sub-section on this Diageo site provides an history, opening hours, etc.
Cardhu (also known as 'Cardow') has its own section on the Diageo website.
Part of the Diageo website - a page with basic information about the distillery.
Section of the Diageo site with a historical overview and general information.
A very attractive site - but why did they make it so difficult to enter?
Lots of funny little bits of trivia on the page with the history of the distillery.
Since Mr. Symington bought Edradour, it's Scotland's smallest independent distillery.
Part of the Diageo website - a page with basic information about the distillery.
Basic website with a little information about history, the range, distributors, etc.
The site has lots of usefull information, but the navigation is pretty confusing.
This site used to be very generic but it has improved a lot - just like the whisky.
A sub-section of the Diageo site with opening hours, history of Glenkinchie, etc.
Warning! Absolutely and utterly useless if you don't accept hostile cookies.
Just like most other distillery sites, it looks good but offers little information.
Glen Ord doesn't have its own website as such; it's part of the Diageo site.
Nicely designed website in the style of the official bottlings. Good work.
Decent enough, but why does every distillery site looks just like the next one?
I'm not too crazy about the malt, but the site has some truly original offerings.
One of Scotland's latest distilleries (or rather projects) already has a website.
Part of the Diageo website - a page with basic information about the distillery.
When I last checked (August 2005) the pages on Lagavulin were mostly empty.
Now here's a site with a style of it's own. Also check out 'friends of Laphroaig'.
One of the very best 'official distillery sites - Excellent design and information.
In August 2005 the Diageo site had little information to offer about Oban.
One of the +/- twenty distilleries I've visited so far has a Diageo sub-site.
An extensive site with information about the distillery, the range, etc.
Not a lot of content on the Diageo sub-site, but what there is is interesting.
A flashy site with a confusing navigation structure and little useful content.
Distillery annex hypermarket. The site seems to be mostly 'under construction'.

Here are a few 'foreign' distilleries and one site that covers thirteen of Diageo's distilleries;

Official Diageo site for thirteen distilleries, including the 'classic' classic malts.
Ireland's only independent distillery produces many brands, including Connemara.
At 'Brennerei Zentrum Bauernhof' in Switzerland they do actually make whisky!

A nice, tightly designed website with just the bare essentials.
Unfortunately, the website seems to be down most of the time.
Scotland's oldest bottler, by their own admission. Little info on the site.
Company in Brittany (France) that bottles their own whiskies.
Flashy site - if you like that kind of stuff. It's quite funny, though.
Website with loads of information on Duncan Taylor and its brands.
A butt-ugly website, but you can find all you need there.
Hart Brothers recently refurbished their 'Spirit of Excellence' website - now with an on-line shop.
A pleasant, no-nonsense website. They list other whisky sites too, quite unique for a bottler.
Well, I'm not sure if two pages can be called a website...
I could have listed this under the 'shops and bars' header as well; they have an on-line store.
This site tends to crash my browser - visit at your own risk.
Very clean website with only the most basic data.
Bad job. One of the worst 'commercial' sites I've come accross.
The German site has an English section. Info about bottlings & the festival.
Basic website about company and brands. Very little information at the moment.
Main website of Fabio Rossi's Italian independent bottling company.

Very enjoyable blog about Japanese Whisky by Chris Bunting. Even more 'niche' than MM!
Jeroen Kloppenburg's website has quickly developed into a great source of information.
The website is a great source of information - the e-book not so much, though...

Looking for whisky websites?
Whisky sites

This website wouldn't be complete without an overview of my favourite links.
These 'Liquid Links' will give you access to a virtual overload of information and
opinions about single malt whisky. For your browsing convenience, I've divided
the links on this page into a few different categories. Allow me to demonstrate;

My personal favourits offer so much fresh and independent information about
whisky that I rarely feel the need to check the 'official channels' - although most
of the Scotch whisky distilleries and independent bottlers have their very own
official website these days. More and more shops & bars have useful websites
too where you can check the menu - or even order your bottles directly online.

One could argue that providing impartial opinions and/or debate about their
products isn't always in the best interest of distilleries, bottlers, shops or bars.
That's different for whisky publications & whisky societies - at least it should be.
Last but not least, I've added a few solid links that have nothing to do with malts.

These links have been last reviewed on 11/01/2010 - recent additions and refreshed pages are printed boldly.

The liquid links below will take you to websites & blogs on the world wide web, but there are other ways to stay informed.
In the past there were mailing lists like Malts-L and usenet groups like alt.drinks.scotch-whisky - but in this modern day and age it's all about communities. Malt Maniacs also started out as a simple on-line community in 1997, but for a decade e-mail and our website were the main means of communication. However, now there's Malt Maniacs & Friends on facebook. Over the years I've seen a few forums and communities being taken over by 'commercial' interests. We felt we should try to offer at least one purely independent and non-commercial alternative on-line. And even with MM&F it doesn't hurt to compare various sources before deciding to invest your hard-earned cash in a bottle - or a cask, or a book, or a trip, or a bagpipe, or a kilt, etcetera.

Obviously, it's a pretty good idea to join the Mixed Messages Mailinglist as well.
For one thing, noteworthy news about the whisky world and these websites magically drops into your mailbox all by itself.
But there's more; For a decade I've been keeping track of my alcoholic adventures via my Liquid Log, but after I wrote my 300th log entry in 2006 - actually seven HTML pages altogether - some log entries are sent 'exclusively' to members of the mailinglist.
